Golf carts are generally designed for golf-course or recreational use and are subject to state, county, municipal, and community rules when operated beyond private property. Permitted roads, hours, driver requirements, decals, and equipment can vary significantly by location.
Low-speed vehicles
LSVs are a distinct vehicle category with specific federal and state requirements. A windshield, lights, mirrors, belts, or a speed upgrade does not automatically convert every golf cart into a compliant LSV.
Request the title and VIN and verify that the vehicle can be registered and insured in the buyer’s jurisdiction. Confirm where it may be driven and whether transport is needed to bring it home.
Seller disclosure
Sellers should describe the documents they actually possess and avoid guaranteeing legality for every buyer or location. State whether the cart is sold as a golf cart or titled LSV, then let the buyer confirm local requirements.
