Before the test drive
Match the serial number or VIN to the seller’s documents. Ask about ownership, liens, title or registration when applicable, maintenance, accidents, flooding, modifications, battery age, charger, keys, manuals, and included accessories.

Physical inspection
Check the frame, underside, roof supports, body mounts, suspension, steering joints, brakes, tires, wheels, seats, belts, windshield, mirrors, wiring, battery tray, terminals, cables, charging port, and evidence of corrosion or water exposure.
Photograph cracks, rust, leaks, worn tires, torn upholstery, damaged wiring, and nonfactory modifications. Confirm that rear seats, lift kits, roofs, and accessories are securely mounted.
Safe test drive
In a permitted area, test cold starting, acceleration, reverse, steering, braking, hill holding when relevant, lights, signals, horn, displays, cameras, audio, and charging. Listen for grinding, clicking, belt noise, suspension movement, or drivetrain vibration.
If the cart is expensive, modified, titled for road use, or shows warning signs, consider an independent inspection by a qualified local shop.
